How about a completely transparent speaker system or window glass with active noise cancellation function? In the scientific laboratory of Harvard University developed a technology that allows you to create a "soft" robotics. The technology is based on the principle of ionic conductivity. A detailed description of the work is given in the latest issue of the journal Science.
The transparent speaker is formed by a thin rubber plate between two layers of mineralized gel. Influencing the gel with high-voltage electrical current, the researchers forced the rubber layer to quickly compress and vibrate, reproducing sound in the full range of frequencies perceived by the human ear - from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
In the structure of traditional conductors, such as copper, atoms occupy a fixed position and transfer electrons along a chain to each other. In ionic conductors, things are different: ions constantly change their position inside the structure. This means that the conductor can be stretched several times without increasing its resistance, and thus not preventing the passage of current through the system. This makes the ionic conductor ideal for use in flexible electronics.
Ionic conductors cannot be called a new idea, but the instability under the influence of high-voltage current made many doubt their practicality. However, Harvard scientists have found a way to protect the system from unwanted chemical reactions. As an insulator, they used a rubber plate.
Scientists hope that ion-based gel-based conductors will allow you to create transparent elastic implants and “soft machines” that can move and feel how a person does.
Other scientists have created a supergel that melts in the cold and "drinks water in buckets."
