Dunu Topsound is no stranger to the personal audio market. I have already acquainted the readers with three very good models of their authorship: Crius, Ares and Hephaes, but the company does not stand still. In addition to a number of interesting low-end models, they presented top-end “hybrid” DN-1000 headphones, which I will discuss.
Headphones that use hybrid technology have become increasingly popular over the past six months, I have described several models before: the T-PEOS H100 and H200, as well as the AudioFly AF-78. The main idea is that the headphones use a dynamic driver for low frequencies and an emitter (or several, as in this case) for middle and high frequencies. The purpose of this design is to allow each of the drivers to work in the range in which it is most fully disclosed (I wrote in detail about the different types of emitters in this material). The main problem with such headphones is to correctly coordinate several different types of emitters. Let's see how Dunu Topsound has succeeded in their new model, designed to become the flagship of their line, both in price ($ 200) and in sound.
Specifications
- Emitters: dynamic 9 mm and double reinforcing
- Frequency range: 16 Hz - 22 kHz
- Sound pressure level: 98 ± 2 dB
- Impedance: 10 Ω
- Noise Reduction: 26 dB
- Plug: 3.5 mm, gold plated
- Cable length: 1.2 m

Package and Delivery
In Dunu Topsound, they never saved on the accessories in the kit or on the packaging, much less they did not do this in their new flagship. The packaging is standard for the company's products: a white “dust jacket”, under it is a black box with a valve on the magnet, everything is sealed in film. Inside on the bed of the pseudo-archive, there are headphones and an aluminum case. The notches on the sides of the lodgement allow you to get it, under it is everything that is included in the package.
With accessories, too, did not save. Included are 11 pairs of nozzles (assuming that they are put on the headphones), there are single and double, and different types of "foam". In addition to the aluminum case, the kit also put a leatherette bag on the puffs. In addition, in the box you will find a pair of ears (very good and securely holding), an adapter for 6.3 mm, an adapter for two mono jacks, a clothespin, a microfiber cloth and rings for adjusting the sound (about them below).
In general, for this parameter DN-1000 on a 10-point scale get a solid 11 points.
Design and wearing comfort
The appearance of the headphones is the most functional, without any frills. The case of silver metal (they still promise black color) with a thickening near the back wall containing the logo ends with a thick and wide sound guide closed by a protective grid. In profile, the headphones resemble short bullets of a large caliber. It looks very stylish.
The cable is very good, moderately thick, in black rubberized insulation. In the cold, it does not harden, to the microphone effect is weakly inclined. Splitter box and plug are very reliable. The cable contains the best invention of the company's engineers - a rubber “tongue” that allows you to quickly fix a rolled cable. I can not help wondering at the convenience of this simple solution.
Headphones can be worn both directly and behind the ear - as you like. The number of nozzles in the delivery package allows you to choose a convenient option for almost everyone, so long-term wearing discomfort does not deliver. Sound insulation is typically good.
Sound
The following equipment was used for listening.
- MacBook Pro Early 2011
- Yulong DA8 in HogMode as DAC / Amplifier
- Fidelia as a player
- Ambient Monitor AM6 HiRez as reference IEM
- Records in lossless formats
Headphones were traditionally warmed up for 48 hours, no changes in sound were observed.
For a start - about the adjustment of the sound rings. Dunu is very pleased with the simplicity and efficiency of its findings and solutions, for example, I will not tire of singing the praises of their wire retainer. The idea that they applied to the DN-1000 is also simple and effective. Its essence is very simple: on the sound guide, between the headphone and the nozzle, rings are put on (12 pieces included, 4 pieces of different thickness), so you adjust the distance between the eardrum and the radiator without changing the usual fit. Included is a card explaining the effect of the small rings on the sound, but on the whole, everything is quite simple: the longer the distance, the smaller the bass. In fact, this addition is more than relevant for hybrid headphones with their powerful bass, which may not please everyone, so Dunu provided such an option, solving the problem in their inherent style of simplicity and efficiency.
Although I will say straight away, I listened to the DN-1000 without rings, since I like the juicy bass of hybrids and I do not feel its excess.
Another aspect that you need to pay attention to with the DN-1000 is the location of the headphones in your ears. Be sure to achieve a tight and comfortable fit to get the right sound, if you do not - the headphones become loudly sharp.
The DN-1000 uses the same driver configuration as the T-PEOS H-200: a low-frequency dynamic emitter for LF and a dual emitter based on balanced armature technology for MF and HF. Not surprisingly, the sound handwriting turned out to be quite similar. Like the rest of the hybrids, the headphones can not be called audiophiles-even, they are more flavoring, with a kind of melodic flow. At the first acquaintance with “hybrids”, there often appears an “excess” effect, since drivers play both bass and MF-HF range, and at the same time one does not interfere with the other. But after a few hours you get used to it.
The bass is strong and deep enough (as far as possible with in-ear headphones), it is well controlled, but on some poorly recorded tracks there is a feeling of its artificiality, although this is not the fault of the headphones. In the rest, the dynamic driver perfectly copes with its main task - adding warmth to the music.
Middle frequencies do not suffer from an emphasis on bass, as is often the case in other models, here the midrange is played out by a separate radiator, and this gives its result. The middle is very clear, well-defined and detailed. It is pleasantly pleased with vocals, guitar parts, stringed instruments.
With HF, too, everything is quite good, despite the noticeable peak shown on the frequency response, the upper frequencies are not excessive and not annoying. They give just the necessary amount of air and space.
Well DN-1000 cope with the construction of the volume of sound space: it is quite deep, the average width. The instruments are well separated from each other, but the music does not break up into separate components.
Compatibility
Headphones have very low impedance and good sensitivity, so they play well with almost any source. I tried it with iPhone 4, iPod Video 5G, iPod Nano 6G and SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip, with all these sources, the headphones sound good, although higher-level players reveal the bass of these headphones better. The quality of the recording headphones are quite soft and forgive many flaws. The only recommendation is: if your player or recordings have a bright sound, listen to them with these headphones beforehand so that there is no excess treble.
findings
Given the good price - the headphones are very interesting. Combining the best of both worlds, they give a good sound, and if we add to this a great package, a good appearance and reliable assembly, we end up with interesting headphones.
