World Echo Record Set

Acoustics Specialist from the University of Salford, Professor Trevor Cox, was able to create and record the longest echo in the world that lasted 112 seconds. The experiment took place in an oil storage tank in Scotland.

To set this record, Trevor Cox descended into the dungeon with recording equipment along with Allan Kilpatrick, a staff member of the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS). Next Kilpatrick fired a single pistol shot. The duration of the fixed reverberation was 112 seconds at a frequency of 125 hertz. However, for the record reverb was taken into account at all frequencies, according to huffingtonpost.com.

The storage tank in which the experiment was conducted was cut down in the rock in 1938-1941 and is a network of tanks connected to each other by pipes. The vault was used until 1982, and now there are guided tours there.

It should be noted that the previous world record for the duration of the echo, according to the Guinness Book of Records, was recorded in 1970 and was 15 seconds. The action took place in a chapel in Hamilton’s mausoleum, also located in Scotland.
