Philae commentary sound published

Rosetta

Want to hear the sound that Philae’s research module produced when it lands on a comet? Experts of the German Aerospace Center participating in the Rosetta mission published this historical audio recording.

The audio recording reproduces the vibrations that accompanied the first contact of Philae to the surface of comet 67P / Churyumov-Gerasimenko, dated November 12, 2014. This is the first in the history of mankind landing of an artificial apparatus on a comet, rushing through the space of our solar system.

Philae's soft landing, which was announced by the European Space Agency (ESA), was accompanied by two jumps. Having bounced off a solid surface hidden under a layer of cometary dust, the device was trapped - being in the shaded part of the comet created a problem of lack of energy.

Sound vibrations were recorded using the CASSE (Cometary Acoustic Surface Sounding Experiment) scientific instrument aboard Philae for the acoustic comet analysis.

As notes the publication Nature World News, the captured sound did not come from outside, but from hermetically sealed cameras with apparatus instruments, where molecules can still vibrate and cause sound waves. As is well known, in airless space, vibrations do not give a sensation of sound.

Philae

The descent vehicle Philae sat down on a soft layer of material several centimeters thick. After a millisecond, he ran into a solid, possibly icy layer of comet 67P / Churyumov - Gerasimenko, the German agency reported, noting that the audio recording helped scientists understand the nature of the landing.

Analysis of the data showed that after the first rebound, the device flew over the surface of the comet for almost two hours, after which it bounced again and commented at a distance of just over one kilometer from the planned landing site. On November 14, Philae exhausted energy and the device went into deep sleep.

The decryption of data that Philae managed to collect continues. Recently it was announced the discovery on the comet of organic matter necessary for the emergence of life.

Audio recording of Philae's commentary can be heard. here . You can also hear the "singing" of the comet.
