Headphones Review Dunu DN-2000 - a new hybrid flagship company

10 Overview

The company Dunu Topsound has long established itself as a manufacturer of first-tier headphones. They produce many OEM models for other brands, but they also have a very strong line of solutions. More recently, I reviewed their hybrid model DN-1000, which used dynamic and dual reinforcement radiators, but Dunu released an improved and more expensive ($ 315) hybrid headphone version - DN-2000, and this review will be devoted to it.

The configuration of the DN-2000 is similar to the “younger brother,” also uses a dynamic emitter for low frequencies and a pair of reinforcement drivers for medium and high frequencies, but the sound was very much modified to fix the main flaws in the hybrid circuit and make the headphones more neutral.

Package and Delivery

The packaging is quite consistent with the high level of the product: thick cardboard, discreet colors, a magnet valve, an unusual round window through which the headphones are visible - everything works on the image of “expensive stuff”.

Even in the budget models, Dunu paid a lot of attention to the delivery set, of course, in the flagship model they also did not lose face. In addition to the DN-2000 themselves, you will receive:

2 In Box

  • 3 pairs of nozzles of different sizes from transparent silicone (soft and bass feed)
  • 3 pairs of nozzles of different sizes of gray silicone (detailed feed)
  • 3 pairs of two-petal nozzles
  • 1 pair of foam nozzles
  • 1 pair of ears
  • adapter for 6.3 mm connectors
  • adapter for dual connectors in airplanes
  • unusual and stylish aluminum case for carrying headphones
  • 6 pairs of metal rings for tuning sound
  • 4 pairs of rubber guides (I'll write about them a little lower)
  • clothespin for fixing the wire

3 Case

As you can see, the set has everything you can want from headphones.

Design and wearing comfort

The Dunu Topsound decided to get away from the chrome cases used in previous models of the company's hybrid headphones. This is not surprising, since the silver cases have already become "mainstream", and the flagship model requires something more interesting. Dunu DN-2000 will delight the buyer with metal cases of exactly that color, which is now fashionable to call "champagne". Their shape is very simple - round cylinders with small annular ledges on the outer edge. At the ends of the company logo is applied, and the side surface of the headphones pleases with the name of the model "Chinggis khaan", written in Cyrillic.

4 Acessories

This model differs from the previous ones by the possibility of installing rubber “petals” for a more secure fit. For this purpose, special ledges-hooks are made on the cases, and the kit contains these same rubber bands of two different configurations, so that you can choose for yourself a convenient and reliable fit. It is possible both direct, and ear to ear. Taking into account the presence in the kit of a mass of various nozzles, you can very easily choose the option that is suitable for comfortable wearing.

I have met on the Internet with reviews that the DN-2000 protruding outer edge causes discomfort to the owners of small ears. I do not have this problem, but if your ears are smaller than the average, it is better to try on this model first.

5 Rubber Ears

The wire DN-2000 is quite simple, in a black silicone shell, but since it is reinforced inside - there are few doubts about its strength. It does not harden much in the cold, the microphone effect is weak. On the wire there is traditionally a Dunu brand invention - a rubber “tongue” for winding the wire. This is a very simple, but incredibly effective solution.

Sound insulation, expected for in-ear headphones, good.

Sound

The following equipment was used for listening.

  • Yulong DA8 as a DAC
  • Yulong A28 as an amplifier
  • Apple MacBook Pro Retina 2013 as a source
  • Fidelia as a player
  • HiFiMan 901 and Fiio X5 as portable players
  • VSonic Gr01 and HiFiMan Re600 as headphones for comparison
  • High-resolution recordings in Lossless-formats (Dr. Chesky The Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc and others)

6 Side by Side

Before listening to the headphones were heated for 48 hours.

As in the previous model, the DN-2000 has the ability to tune the sound using complete rings that are put on the sound guide, which, in turn, leads to a deeper fit. I didn’t really like the sound with the rings, because excessive harshness and sibilants appear on the HF. So further sound feedback is based on the version without rings.

7 Rear View

I am very pleased that in DN-2000 the developers did not make the “typical” sound for hybrids, but worked on the existing drivers to get a new sound, which they did well. In the DN-2000, compared with 1000, the number of low-frequency bass is slightly reduced, although they have remained just as powerful, but this power is better controlled and supplied more appropriately. The bass is very, very deep. DN-2000 is definitely not suitable for fans of fat bass, but most genres from such tuning LF won. Firstly, the headphones play better with players that do not perfectly control the bass, and secondly, improving the detail of the bass is for them to benefit.

8 Side View

The mids were also improved compared to the DN-1000. Being the same detailed, they became a little warmer, and this removed the slight hint of synthetics that the 1000 model had. Vocal tracks sound just fascinating, musical and close to the listener. This allows you to convey the slightest details of the emotions invested by the vocalist in your own part, so with DN-2000 charismatic performers (but not only they) are great. The instruments completely preserve their character, they are well separated and easily positioned by ear.

The upper frequencies are very similar to the DN-1000. Good detail, resolution and length give a sufficient amount of air and volume in the compositions, but without surplus, leading to sharpness.

9 Tipless

In general, the DN-2000 has a sound that is a bit atypical for hybrid headphones, it is similar to the sound of purely rebar models, but with the addition of powerful feedback on low frequencies.

The virtual headphone scene is very good, especially in width. The tools are clearly separated and well positioned.

Compatibility

Dunu DN-2000 is quite good at playing with simple sources, but still a high-quality player and no less high-quality recordings are required to fully reveal their potential. Otherwise, you risk with frank frankness to hear the shortcomings of your path and the flaws of the sound producer, who was responsible for the work in the studio.

findings

Dunu Topsound is developing new market segments. Having successfully released a series of headphones in the middle segment, they took up the market for top solutions. The first pancake they definitely did not get a lump, DN-2000 is a very strong model, in its market segment it is very good. Excellent tuned sound, good design, a rich package - all the details give the company a great experience in creating headphones.
