Headphone Rock Jaw Kommand review - three sound options in one model

1 Main Pic

The British from the company Rock Jaw promptly broke into the market of headphones and began to quickly win a place. A well-thought-out model range with good sound and corresponding prices allowed them to quickly gain popularity. But in their product line there was clearly not enough flagship, and the hybrid model Kommand, released in late November, was called to remedy this situation.

I have already talked about the Rock Jaw Arcana model, which offers an interesting sound and an incredibly stylish performance. Kommand as a whole also fit into the general ideology of the company, since they are made of wood with metal, like the rest of their models. The new flagship is also highlighted by the presence of "built-in" ears that allow you to wear these headphones comfortably.

2 Box

The novelty is built according to a hybrid scheme using an armature emitter for medium and high frequencies and a dynamic one for the low-frequency range. Of the interesting options, you can note the ability to customize the sound using replaceable filters.

Headphone price in the company's online store is 119 pounds , worldwide shipping is free, a nice addition is a three-year warranty.

3 Acessories

Package and Delivery

The box is designed in the general style for the company, a dense box of cardboard with a window through which the headphones resting on the velvety lodgement are visible. This is complemented by a neat typography and a well-thought-out color scheme. Since Kommand have an unusual look, the box showing this looks very advantageous.

4 Overview

In addition to the headphones themselves, you get a nice bag for carrying, three pairs of interchangeable nozzles of different sizes, a clothes peg for fixing the cable and three pairs of interchangeable filters that provide different sound.

Design and wearing comfort

In the design of the Rock Jaw headphones, they decided to go in a slightly unusual way and made Kommand from wood and metal, like all the rest of their channel models. A rather large case of dense dark wood with a characteristic texture looks very interesting. The hull shape is cylindrical with ledges; the front and rear parts are made of aluminum.

5 Rear view

On the back end of the fixed ear with two hinges, allowing you to adjust the location of this site. In general, initially the idea of these ears seemed strange to me, but when they can be adjusted, you understand that the idea is very true. Since the hybrid system takes up a lot of volume, the headphone case turned out to be quite long and protruding beyond the head, so if there were no ears, the Kommand would have been bad in their ears, falling out under their own weight.

Headphones are different from their counterparts by the presence of replaceable filters; this idea of Rock Jaw was worked out on past dynamic models, right there it was brought to the maximum. Sound drivers containing filters are mounted on the thread, this allows you to quickly change them if you want, getting three completely different sound options.

6 Side view

The cable is simple, in silicone insulation, reinforced. It does not harden in the cold and is not prone to strong entanglement, but the microphone effect is still felt, despite the presence of the ears. On the left cable is a one-button headset with a microphone. Splitter - plastic, fairly reliable. The plug is made at right angles. The place of cable exit from the headphone case is additionally reinforced with metal tubes. According to the general feeling, the cable “does not reach” a little to the general level of headphones, although in general it is not bad.

Due to the presence of the ears, Kommand rush very comfortably, in the ears they are almost imperceptible, therefore, with the right selection of nozzles, wearing them does not cause the slightest discomfort. Sound insulation at a good level, although for a very noisy environment, the headphones still do not fit.

7 Without filter

Sound

The following equipment was used for listening:

  • Yulong DA8 as a DAC and Amplifier
  • Resonessence Labs Concero HP as a DAC and Amplifier
  • Apple MacBook Pro Retina 2013 as a source
  • Fidelia as a player
  • Fiio X5 and Shanling M3 as portable players
  • VSonic Gr01 and HiFiMan Re600 as headphones for comparison
  • High-resolution recordings in Lossless-formats (Dr. Chesky The Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc and others)

Before listening to the headphones were heated for 48 hours.

8 Angled view

Just want to say that the replaceable filters in these headphones justify themselves 100 percent. It is unlikely that you will change them all the time, but to get three different sound options at once and choose the one that is most suitable for you - the idea is excellent.

With the silver filters installed by default, Kommand are getting closer to the bass headset, but without crossing this line. Inside these nozzles there is a membrane inside which vibrates the low frequencies and weakens the high frequencies. There is a lot of bass by quantity, it is pleasantly percussive, textured, but sometimes it creeps into mids. Some things like Eric Klepton's records benefit from such a low-frequency feed, some, such as brutal metal, are not so good, so it’s up to you to decide which of the options is better.

9 Other rear view

Golden filters offer a balanced sound due to the presence of a sponge-like damper inside. It was on them that I stopped. The bass, still quite good in detail, retreats a bit and gains better control without mixing up with mid frequencies and high frequency range. And here Kommand reveal themselves from the best side, it turns out that they have wonderful MF that perfectly convey all emotions and nuances. In combination with detailed HF, this gives the effect of a very wide stage and a good pseudo volume, which benefits many genres. Headphone sound is not typically hybrid, with a V-shaped frequency response, but rather looks like a good armature, which added low frequencies and drive.

10 With Fiio X5

Black, “high-frequency” filters, as expected, remove most of the bass, leaving an emphasis on the mid and high range. Fans of monitor sound will appreciate this option, although, for my taste, it is too bright.

Compatibility

Headphones play fairly well with simple sources such as smartphones and tablets, it’s not for nothing that the developers provided a headset, and due to the taste supply they can even level some source disadvantages, but this does not always happen, the wretchedness of the audio section of some smartphones is only emphasized. Therefore, buying these headphones, you should consider the quality of the source. Kommand's bad records are fairly tolerant, but they benefit a lot from the good ones.

11 Again with Fiio X5

The quality of the microphone is average, during a conversation it is better to bring it closer to your face.

conclusions

Even the fact that the three-driver hybrid scheme is used in the headphones would be enough to make them interesting. But Rock Jaw went further and offer at the same time an unusual wooden case with metal, replaceable filters, radically changing the sound and built-in ears for comfortable wearing. In combination with the democratic price, all this makes Rock Jaw Kommand a very, very interesting model.
