I have never had occasion to write a review of headphones, which I once viewed. But Brainwavz is not in vain one of the leaders of the personal audio market, once again they proved it, releasing an updated version of the headphones R3, a review of which once already appeared on the pages of AppleInsider.ru. It's time to look at the second revision.
It should be noted immediately that the headphones from Brainwavz were very unusual, not every company would have the courage to release such. Their appearance surprises at once, but, as often happens - it is due solely to the design.
In R3, two emitters are used, but in contrast to competitors who prefer coaxial (on one axis) placement of speakers, Brainwavz went the other way. They placed the speakers in front of each other in a hollow chamber designed to "mix" the sound, and already from this chamber comes the sound guide, directed into the ear of the listener. Such a complex design and led to a non-traditional appearance and a fairly large size.
The price taking into account the unusual scheme and good sound (about it below) is very democratic. In the company store MP4Nation

Packing and delivery kit
With the boxes at Brainwavz, everything is traditionally good, but for R3 they are especially dilapidated. A very interesting cardboard box with a through plastic "window", through which headphones are visible, is supplemented by accurate polygraphy. On the box, a lot of interesting information is printed, starting with technical specifications and ending with a diagram of the earpiece in a section. Inside everything is placed in a neat plastic container. The packaging looks very presentable.
In addition to the headphones themselves, you get a lot of things:
- Case made of ballistic nylon
- Adapter from 3.5 to 6.3 mm
- Adapter for using headphones on the airplane
- 6 pairs of single-flange nozzles of different sizes
- 1 pair of two-flange nozzles
- 1 pair of three-flange nozzles
- 1 pair of Comply T-series foams
As you can see, the bundle contains everything you can wish for.
Design and Convenience
As I wrote above, the appearance of R3 is very unusual. Silvery round barrels are designed for breezing. In the first version, these headphones had a large fragment of the cable with a memory effect, which caused a lot of complaints, in the updated version it got rid of it, instead, there is just a flexible fragment around the headphones that allows you to hang the R3 by letting the wire from the top of the ear. Despite the frightening appearance, wearing the R3 is quite comfortable, the long sound guide makes their landing absolutely problem-free, even for owners of small ears. In addition, the new version, if desired, can be worn and wire down, although it is not very convenient, in my opinion.
The case of headphones is very durable, it is made of thick aluminum and, perhaps, is able to survive any treatment. An interesting design find - in the slot on the outside of the case you can see the cable going to the "bottom" radiator.
Cable - also gives confidence in its longevity. It is very thick, but it is soft enough, so it does not get tangled and almost does not microphone. In the frost hardens weakly, in general - a tenacious cable. Also pleasing with reliability and a splitter with a plug.
Sound insulation at the headphones - above all praise. A long soundtrack with multi-flange nozzles will provide reliable protection against external noise.
Sound
The following equipment was used for listening:
- Yulong DA8 as a DAC and amplifier
- Resonessence Labs Concero HP as a DAC and Amplifier
- Apple MacBook Pro Retina 2013 as a source
- Fidelia as a player
- Fiio X5 and Shanling M3 as portable players
- VSonic Gr01 and HiFiMan Re600 as headphones for comparison
- High Definition Records in Lossless-formats (Dr. Chesky The Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc and others)
Before listening to the headphones were warmed for 48 hours.
The memory is of course unreliable, but it seems to me that the sound in the new R3 is also slightly ottyuningovali, perhaps just at the level of adjusting the crossover, the midrange became better in terms of detail, plus the overall emphasis of the sound shifted more strongly in the area of the MF.
The frequency response of the headphones is almost linear up to 2 KHz, the beginning of the decline is about 10 dB with a peak of about 10 KHz, for headphones of this price category - an excellent option. The sound is really very smooth, without any accents.
The bass is excellent, it has energy, it is deep enough and normally controlled, it allows it to keep exclusively within its own area of frequency response, without muffling the middle frequencies.
The midrange is a little accentuated, it allows the headphones to perfectly convey the emotions of the vocals, the features of the sound of individual instruments, and also to build a three-dimensional virtual scene. Generally, the creation of "three-dimensionality" - Brainwavz R3, they sound very open, wide for headphones of this price range and form factor.
The HF is slightly weakened, this made it possible to create a non-tiring sound that is well suited to most genres, although sometimes there is not enough air on complex orchestral records, but given the price, this is expected. Headphones are almost not prone to sibilants and sharpness.
Compatibility
The headphones in general play with smartphones and tablets, I tried them with the iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air and different vintage players. With all of them, headphones open well, but their potential is still higher, so they are worth using with a quality source.
Also, the headphones are quite critical to the quality of recording, on bad tracks all of their volume and magic of sound are lost.
conclusions
Very, very interesting model. Despite the strange appearance, the headphones are comfortable to wear, sound very good, and the democratic price is very encouraging. In Brainwavz have done the work to eliminate the shortcomings of the first version, and now the headphones have become even more interesting.
