Today I will tell you about a new model of the HyperX gaming headset called
The box meets us with a bright design and reminds that the Cloud Stinger headset works not only in conjunction with the PC, but also with the Mac, PS4, Xbox One, Wii U and mobile devices. To be honest, I hardly imagine myself walking around my hometown in such a headset, the microphone is immovable. But we must assume that the brave will be found.
Inside the cardboard sleeve was a box of solid black cardboard, inside which the headset hid.
The packaging is made in such a way that we immediately note to ourselves: yeah, and the cups at this headset are rotated 90 degrees. This design fits perfectly on the head of any shape and configuration, which even at the unpacking stage throws Cloud Stinger extra points for comfort.
In addition to the headset inside the box, I found the welcoming words of the manager of HyperX Anders Williamsen, as well as instructions for operating in pictures. Everything is simple and tasteful, as I love.
In due time I already told you about two other headsets of this manufacturer: Cloud Drone and CloudX. If the first refers to budget decisions, and the latter to the premium segment, the Cloud Stinger is somewhere in between. This headset, which with its almost imperceptible weight can boast of very outstanding technical characteristics, precise positioning of sound sources and incredible comfort. Now everything in order.
In the eye immediately rushes the updated design of the device. In the case of Cloud Drone and CloudX, the design was similar, but the Cloud Stinger on their background looks like something completely fresh. The appearance of the headset has become more angular, as if carved out of stone. As it seems to me, the new look gives Cloud Stinger some masculinity. Such a decision of HyperX designers went to the device exclusively for the benefit, as it began to feel much more compact, leaving some elements of the old design in the past.
The headband changed the least. As before, it was a very soft pillow filled with foam with a memory effect. The headset weighs only 275 grams, but HyperX engineers are trying to do everything to make its use even more comfortable.
The headset is adjustable in height from both sides of the headband, sliding along the plastic guide with serifs. Note that this rail is fixed to a steel frame passing through the entire retaining structure. This makes the Cloud Stinger much more durable and durable, so you do not have to shake every time you drop the device on the floor or slop it off your head.
As I noted just above, the cups of the headset freely rotate by 90 degrees, which allows you to lay it on a flat surface in this way. Plus this "frog pose" is that if you forgot to turn off the sound, the speakers facing down will not make a noise to the entire room. This is especially true if one of your loved ones is sleeping somewhere nearby.
At the top of the headband flaunts the logo of HyperX. Let me remind you that in more expensive models of the Cloud line this logo is embroidered with threads on the skin.
Leather ear cushions are filled with the original HyperX foam with a memory effect. But, as you already know, the skin will inevitably lead to fogging your ear shells. If the package comes with a more expensive headset CloudX comes a pair of velor "breathable" ear cups, then in the box with Cloud Stinger you can not find anything like that. The level of noise insulation is not ideal, but very good. You will be shielded from most of the sounds of the outside world, nevertheless relatives and friends will be able to shout at you without any problems.
After I removed the ear pads from the headset, I was waiting for a pleasant surprise. It turned out that 50 mm dynamic radiators with neodymium magnets are located at a small angle in the direction of the auricles. This is done in order to accurately deliver sound directly into the ears, thereby improving the sense of volume and accuracy of the positioning of sound sources in games.
After testing the headset in several games for PlayStation 4, including Titanfall 2 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, I came to the conclusion that there really is a sense in this arrangement of the emitters. The sound space inside the games began to be felt more accurately than in the previous models of HyperX headsets, which I managed to try out in the case. I noticeably quickly began to determine the direction from which even the quietest sounds are heard, for example, the footsteps of an enemy soldier or the rustle of leaves under the feet of a creeping predator. But the best headset has demonstrated itself in games for virtual reality. Playing, for example, in the fresh Robinson: The Journey from the studio Crytek, I literally felt that I was the only one who survived on a foreign planet. Binaural 3D sound created one of the most important components of the effect of presence.
At the bottom of the right cup of the headset is a slider to adjust the volume. I really like such elegant solutions, as they relieve the wires from the built-in control panels and, as a result, make the device noticeably lighter. On the other hand, the circular volume control in the same Cloud Drone seemed somewhat more convenient to me. In the case of the Cloud Stinger, it is a little more difficult to touch the control with your fingers.
The headset is equipped with a unidirectional non-removable microphone with built-in noise canceling system, which ensures that you transmit crystal clear sound of your voice during network battles or when recording podcasts. The microphone, as in the case of the Cloud Drone, is turned on by simply turning to the bottom position and turning off with a characteristic click once you lift it upright again.
The microphone leg is flexible and holds the shape well, so you can adjust its position relative to your face.
The Cloud Stinger cable is stripped of nylon braiding and is covered with a thick layer of durable rubberized material, which eliminates kinks and fractures. But that's what I did not like the cable, so it's his constant twisting. But here you can not help it, the headset is not a premium, so some elements had to be sacrificed to please an affordable price.
But for what I love HyperX headsets, it's because their cable, as a rule, consists of two parts: from the main wire and an additional extension-adapter. Now I will explain why it is so important for me. When I play on my gaming consoles, whether it's PlayStation 4 or even Nintendo Wii U, I just do not need a long wire. It will hang and get in the way, distracting from the game. The Cloud Stinger is equipped with a 1.3-meter cable, which for me is just right: I slipped a 3.5mm plug into the DualShock 4 gamepad and ran off. If you plan to use the headset in pairing with your PC, then you can use an additional complete extension cable of 1.7 meters length, ending with two 2-pin plugs.
It's time to talk about the most important thing - about sound. Here, to Cloud Stinger, there are no complaints at all. When covering the frequency range of 18-23 000 hertz, the device produces an exceptionally high-quality sound, which can be compared with much more expensive products of competitors. Excellent bass, crystal-clear high frequencies, and thanks to the aforementioned directional speakers, all this forms an impressive 3D-scene. Speech, of course, is now about using the headset in video games. No, of course, you can listen to music, watch movies and even use it in conjunction with a smartphone. It will do very well with any tasks assigned to it, and it is possible that it will even surpass all your expectations. But all the same the device is designed for a completely different audience of users, rather than audiophiles or movie fans. On those who can not live without video games. For the sound, HyperX always gets solid 5s from me. They are very good at combining low price with impressive quality of products.
