Headphone review Dunu DK-3001 - King of the hill

I do not even remember when Dunu announced their plans to release several new multi-driver hybrids, if I'm not mistaken, then something went on about two years ago. Last year, we were pleased with DN-2002, and in this finally the light saw 3001, do not release raw versions - this is the principle of Dunu Topsound, so the development of models takes them so much time. Let's see what happened in the end.

Of course, Dunu is not used to solving complex engineering problems in the field of personal audio - in addition to its own products, the company is also actively engaged in OEM manufacturing for eminent players of the market, but to reconcile 4 different types of radiators - the task is not trivial, but to fit them into an ergonomic case - and very hard. Although, perhaps, the intrigue of pulling on me for a long time does not work out, I will say right away that Dunu could overcome all difficulties and release the very top headphones in its history. The price tag DK-3001 in stores exceeds $ 500, although in this case it is worth noting that it is not in vain.

Packing and delivery kit

If in some way Dunu and maintain stability, so it's in packaging. A dense box of black cardboard, a top "white" cover with polygraphy and everything is tightened with a film so that you are sure that no one has used headphones before you. Inside lie DK-3001, two wires (regular and balanced), an excellent plastic carrying case, an adapter for 6.3 mm, an "aerial" adapter for 2 monojacks and attachments. The latter are represented by a pair of foams from Comply, a standard package of SpinFit (4 pairs), plus one more pair immediately put on the headphones, 3 pairs of white silicone attachments and 3 pairs of gray attachments (different from white by sound). As you can see, the delivery kit is even larger than imaginable.

Design and comfortable wearing

After the release of DN-2002, which kicked out a tear even in some experienced breeders, Dunu designers realized that it's impossible to live like this, and they strained their creative gland, giving as a result the most comfortable headphones in the history of the company and some of the most convenient for planting "universals " at all. Sometimes, looking at the hulls of the three thousandths of the first, I can not understand where 3 armatures are placed there - it's so small and compact (of course, relatively, because you have somewhere to place a 13-mm speaker). The form, I think, is clear from photographs: a flat disk with an interesting bevel, from which the angular sound ducts exit. The latter, unfortunately, do not have any protrusions, and, probably, over time, headphones will be subject to the standard for Dunu hybrids problem - flying nozzles remaining in the ears. However, so far 3001 in combination with SpinFit after 3 months of operation behave perfectly, either the diameter of the sound guide was picked up correctly, or SpinFit is steep - I do not know.

The body of hybrids is made entirely of metal, according to Dunu, it is steel and do not believe the bases, perhaps not. Headphones are slightly heavier than usual, but thanks to competent planting of problems this weight does not deliver. The DK-3001 was created exclusively for breezing, if the same DN-2002 could be landed and pulled down (and, judging by the placement of inscriptions and logos, this option was originally intended by the developers), then DK-3001 does not allow liberties in this respect . In my opinion, this is a reasonable step, it is necessary to impose convenient solutions even by force. Of course, the build quality is worthy of all praise, everything is absolutely perfect.

Headphones are very comfortable to wear, especially if you pick up suitable attachments, problems can only be with owners of very small ears. Sound insulation - medium, on the one hand, the headphone body itself cuts out some of the noise, on the other hand - sound ducts are not long and the landing is not the deepest. In general, for normal urban transport and noisy streets, the DK-3001 will be good, but they will not be enough in the metro, the plane or the launch pad of Space-X.

Of course, the developers could not screw up and make a model of this price category without a replacement cable. The DK-3001 uses a completely standard MMCX, no protrusions in the connectors, as it was in DN-2002, no, so the wire can be picked up any. Dunu has its own high-end cable with MMCX, but in fact the complete DK-3001 cords are very good. Of course, they are not twisted, not transparent, lacking all audiophile gloss, they are just very high-quality and comfortable wires in standard silicone insulation. They are equipped with large areas with a memory effect, which make it possible to form comfortable earlocks, they do not harden in the frost, they are not practically microphone and do not get tangled. In addition, they are equipped with a branded rubber tongue for looking - what else is necessary for happiness? Special thanks to the developers for including a 2.5 mm TRRS cable into the bundle, this is much more useful than a cable with a microphone that continues to shove to many headphones. That's serious, who will buy headphones more expensive than $ 200 for a mobile phone?

Sound

The following equipment was used for listening.

  • NuPrime DAC-10H and Resonessence Labs Concero HP as DAC and Amplifier
  • Apple MacBook Pro Retina 2016 as a source
  • Fidelia as a player
  • Lotoo PAW Gold, theBit OPUS # 2 and iBasso DX200 as portable players
  • High Definition Records in Lossless-formats (Dr. Chesky The Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc and others)

Before listening to the headphones were warmed for 72 hours.

The reconciliation of the four emitters is clearly not an easy task, and not all developers get their coherent work (a trivial example is a collection of inexpensive hybrid models from China, where the junctions of the radiator bands are audible immediately). But for Dunu, such problems do not constitute a problem, which is not surprising with their experience - the DK-3001 sounds very holistically and monolithic, quite at the level of the best in this parameter models. If we talk in general about the filing of this model, the company continues to move along the taken vector - avoiding the colored filing and moving to a more neutral sound. However, the DK-3001 still remains slightly flavorful, thanks to a slight emphasis on LF.

Of course, an important role in the perception of this model is played by attachments, so there is plenty to choose from. Comply traditionally slightly mute the high-frequency and high-frequency range for the joy of high-frequency fobs. SpinFit - on the contrary, emphasize the ends of the frequency range, giving the sound more drive. Standard single-flange nozzles balance somewhere between these two poles, while the gray ones slightly accentuate the VCh. Naturally, this is all true for my ears, your result can differ simply due to physiology. Having looked through all the options, I settled on SpinFit, just out of subjective taste preferences.

The bass of the DK-3001 is deep, strong and massive. Of course, this is not a basshed model designed to massage the eardrums, but when necessary, these kids can decently bark, surprising both by the power of the LF and their elaboration. I for myself have long ago deduced some dichotomy in the filing of LF, roughly speaking, the headphones for feeding this part of the range can be either biting or massive. Of course, in an ideal world it is necessary to combine both, but in practice to create a "mass" you need to slow down the speed slightly, which will affect the biting. We do not expect heavyweight fighter speed. In the DK-3001, the bass is slightly biased towards the "mass", in my hearing, this is the best option, since it is more natural from the point of view of the transfer of real musical instruments. However, with the resolution and elaboration of textures in the heroes of this review, everything is almost perfect, if, of course, it allows demonstrating the source. The bass is perfectly controlled and adheres to its place without climbing into the territory of other bands.

I would, perhaps, describe the middle frequencies as the epithet "transparent". The DK-3001 has a surprisingly realistic presentation and a very voluminous imaginary scene that allows the instruments to reveal their character very naturally, closing their eyes makes it easy to imagine the exact positioning of sound sources. Headphones are not inclined to embellish the pitch (the microscopic heat accumulation in the sound of the MF can be considered an easy shade, roughly like a stick of a carnation in black coffee), so they transmit exactly what is put into the track. In this case, headphones avoid excessive monitor dryness, which is typical for low-cost hybrid models. The DK-3001 accentuates the vocals well, emphasizing the emotions of the performers, and especially they are good at conveying the character of the timbre-rich instruments.

HF too deserve kind words. Of course, this is not DN-2000J, but in DK-3001 the developers have tried to make the transmission of the "tops" as full, detailed and natural. The very step-like RF-fobs will not like this step, but people who are not affected by this disease will definitely appreciate how accurately and scrupulously these hybrids play out the high-frequency range. This manner adds air compositions, saturates music with complex overtones and reveals the potential of percussion in saturated tracks. Naturally, for this purpose the tracks themselves must be irreproachably recorded, and the source should play irreproachably with attacks and damping.

By tradition, several brief comparisons. I will not compare incomparable, of course, so here are those models that look next to 3001 logically.

Dunu DN-2000 . Dunu's first attempt to make "serious" three-wheel hybrids was a success. DN-2000 have a pleasant, slightly colored pitch with accents for LF and HF. At DK-3001 similar accents are less expressed, due to this the new modification sounds more natural and more involving.

Dunu DN-2000J . A small step aside, hybrids with a drier and lighter sound. The DK-3001 is not as bright on the HF and more massive in the bass area, and the MF 3001 is more emotional, while the 2000J sounds drier and contrasting.

Dunu DN-2002 . Again step aside, but this time big, 2002 make the main emphasis on midrange, their deep bass and the upper edge of the frequency range are deliberately omitted, which as a result gives a pleasantly relaxed pitch with an emphasis on the center of the range. On the other hand - they do not have the eficiency inherent in 3001, and their uncomfortable landing has become almost a legend.

Oriveti New Primacy . One more three-driver hybrids, distinguished by excellent comfort and good tuning. The DK-3001 surpasses them in the depths of LF, the MF band's emotionality and HF length, but the difference in price is almost 2 times, so New Primacy is confidently performing in its niche.

Campfire Audio Andromeda . Headphones, which have become almost legendary standards of the world of IEM. If you take comfort beyond the brackets (and Andromeda has some small questions about this parameter) and evaluate the pure sound, then Andromeda sounds drier, especially on LF. Their bass is faster, more biting, the middle is more neutral, and the HF is a little brighter.

Noble Kaiser Encore . Of course, comparing models with almost 4-fold price difference is not very useful, but I can not help but note that the flagship of the famous Noble and DK-3001 have some common features (albeit remote). Despite Kaiser's superiority in almost everything, it also sounds with a slight bias in the warmth and tones the emotions.

iBasso IT03 . As with New Primacy, the price tag is almost 2 times lower, but still attempts to compare IT03 with DK-3001 will be ("because they are also hybrids"). The DK-3001 sounds more emotional, warmer and less dry, offering a more musical pitch where IT03 is trying to take on bare technicalities.

Compatibility

In fact, the DK-3001 can not be without pleasure listening to even from simple mobile phones, they do not deal with the maximum accentuation of the shortcomings of the path. But at least once listening to them with a good player of the upper-middle or top-end segment, you do not want to return to something easier. It's players like iBasso DX200 or OPUS # 2 - this is what this model needs. Of course, low impedance and good sensitivity impose requirements on the source, but cool players will not have problems with DK-3001.

Genre headphones are very versatile, but styles with live instruments evoke in them the effect of maximum euphoria: jazz, blues, folk, classical rock - these and many other genres acquire a new life with these hybrids. To the quality of recording headphones are moderately tolerant, on a 10-point scale somewhere by 7 points.

Several traditional sample tracks

Van der Graaf Generator - La Rossa . As I wrote already above, especially effectively sound in these headphones tracks, saturated with percussion. Well, who in our country is active in using such tools? Of course, art rockers. It would be trite to use King Crimson, so I chose another mega-popular band and their track from Still Life album. A perfect combination of guitar, percussion and wind, laid out DK-3001 "on the shelves" immediately falls in love with and fascinates.

Postmodern Jukebox - Sledgehammer . It seems that Scott Bradley with his project has accelerated to full capacity and with all his might trying to reach the speed of one album per quarter. On a fresh record of "Fake Blues", he continues to replay everything that comes to hand in his charming style, combining cabaret, jazz and boogie. Did not escape the similar fate and megahit of Peter Gabriel, however, he had a bit of fun clearly benefited. The cover is beautifully played and just as well recorded, so high-end headphones like the monitored ones help him to open up to the fullest.

Miles Davis - New York Girl (On the Corner) . Most jazz connoisseurs, speaking of Miles, immediately imply "Kind of Blue", at worst something like "Bitches Brew" or "Sketches of Spain", although the discography of the great artist is much more versatile and there are amazing diamonds like " On the Corner ". Released in 1972, the album is an attempt to mix the academicity of jazz and the booming rhythms of the streets, which at that time were tearing their way from the underground to the mainstream. Judging by how many popular hip-hop artists drew the samples from this album, Davis managed to combine such different things into a harmonious and fascinating rafting. This album is full of live energy, eclecticism and unexpected turns of the "plot", is saturated with percussion and other instruments, so the DK-3001 cope with it brilliantly, emphasizing all its versatility.

conclusions

Yes, the DK-3001 is very expensive by the standards of Dunu, but their build quality, delivery kit, wearing comfort and, of course, sound - fully correspond to this price level and in many ways even surpass it. So Dunu Topsound once again proved that they know how to create complex solutions in the world of IEM, and we still have to look forward to another six months or a year before the next DK-4001.
