The company Dunu Topsound has long been at the hearing of advanced music lovers who value high-quality sound at an affordable price. Starting with the production of OEM models for major brands, Dunu also has its own headset line, which often is not inferior even to expensive solutions. One of its representatives are hybrid headphones DN-2000 and dynamic Titan 5 with a titanium diaphragm. It is they who will be devoted to today's review.
Speaking of the DN-2000, they have much in common with the predecessor DN-1000: a dynamic radiator for low frequencies and two rebar for medium and high frequencies. At the same time, in the new model, the manufacturer focused on neutrality and tried to minimize all the shortcomings of hybrid solutions.
The basis of the Titan 5 was the Titan 1, which became so popular that even Fiio decided to launch them under their brand, slightly changing the cable and the package. But it can not be said that this is simply the "older brother" of the first "titans": it is rather an interesting alternative offering users a closed acoustic design, replacement cables and a proprietary Dunu sound.
Dunu has always paid a lot of attention to the packaging and delivery kit and in the case of DN-2000 also decided to keep the level. A box of thick cardboard hides an unusual round window through which you can see the headphones. Even devices for 600-1000 dollars are rarely shown.
In addition to the headphones themselves, they were put in the kit:
3 pairs of nozzles of different sizes from transparent silicone (soft and bass feed)
3 pairs of nozzles of different sizes from gray silicone (detailed feed)
3 pairs of double-lip baits
1 pair of foam nozzles
1 pair of eyelets
adapter for connectors 6.3 mm
adapter for dual connectors in aircraft
unusual and stylish aluminum carrying case for headphones
6 pairs of metal rings for tuning sound
4 pairs of rubber guides (I will write about them a little lower)
clothes clip
It's hard to say that they were not put in the kit, since there is everything you need here. Box Titan 5 is also made in the corporate style of Dunu: under a comfortable lid on the magnet - a window through which headphones are visible, and Max Barskikh on the inner liner.
In the box were put 6 pairs of different single-flange nozzles (differ in design and width of the "exhaust"), adapter for 6.3 mm, clip for fixing the cable to clothing and a plastic box for storage. By the way, silicone pads on the main body of the headphone, which improve the fit due to fixation in the auricle as in DN-2000, are also present here. It is necessary to get used to such ear cushions, but this is compensated by the planting strength, which is very useful for running and other active ways to spend time.
Design and landing
Externally, the Titan 5 shows a continuity with the Titan 1, but there are differences. The first concerns the material of the case: now it is stainless steel, molded under pressure. Due to this, the headphones became slightly heavier, but they look very stylish. In addition, there was a closed acoustic design - in the case now only one hole on the part that faces the inside of the auricle. Another important innovation was the replacement cable, using MMCX-connectors.
As for planting, the titans can not go up, perhaps, only to the owners of the smallest ear-shells. Weight is evenly distributed over the outer part of the auricle, and comfort and soundproofing can be compared with headphones-plugs.
The headphones are assembled very qualitatively and, if you take into account the replaceable cable, will certainly last as long as possible. The cable, by the way, is made of ordinary black silicone, but it does not harden in the frost, does not get confused with the incomprehensible "something", excludes the microphone effect, including with the help of a clip on clothes in the kit.
In DN-2000, the manufacturer decided to move away from the chromed cases used in previous models of the company's hybrid headphones. Instead, we are greeted by metal champagne cases. In shape, the headphones are also different: they are round cylinders with small annular projections on the outer edge and a company logo on the ends.
For a more secure fit, rubber "petals" are used - for this, special hook-shaped hooks are made on the bodies. Headphones provide both direct and behind-the-shoulder wearing: an abundance of attachments in the kit allows you to choose a suitable for a comfortable wearing option.
The cable is also in a black silicone shell, but inside it is reinforced, which leaves all doubts about strength. The wire traditionally has a proprietary invention Dunu - rubber "tongue" for winding wire. During the testing, the microphone effect is not detected, and even at 15 degrees below zero the cable does not harden much.
Sound
The following equipment was used for listening:
FiiO X5 III
Apple MacBook Pro Retina 2012
Apple iPhone 7 Plus
High Definition Records in Lossless Formats
Before listening to both pairs of headphones were heated for 48 hours.
Beginning the conversation about sound, first of all I would like to note the possibility of tuning the sound in DN-2000 with the help of complete rings on the sound guide. First of all they are necessary for "fitting" the ear of a particular listener: the closer the landing in the ear canal, the better the headphones transmit low frequencies and make the sound more spacious.
Metal rings significantly add DN-2000 bass, such tuning will be very handy when listening to tracks in the genre of hip-hop. Medium frequencies are slightly lost on the background of pronounced lower ones, so this sound color is better used for some genres.
With silicone rings, sound at first seems too sharp, you can trace the sibilants at high frequencies. Its role is played by overlapping a hole in a sound chamber: it takes some time to get used to it, but then you can not perceive vocal compositions or electronic music without tuning, you always want to add a sound of bulk.
In DN-2000, the developers worked on the available drivers to get a new sound. Low frequencies are slightly reduced compared to the first generation, but the bass is very deep. Middle frequencies remained detailed and became slightly warmer, which had a positive effect on the impressions from listening to vocal compositions. Tools completely retain their character, they are well separated and easily positioned by ear. The upper frequencies are crystal clear and voluminous, but without sharpness.
Titan 5 gives even more stunning volumes of bass, not without harm to the middle frequencies. The low frequencies are large, deep, very voluminous and massive: the effect of the subwoofer with the correct source (in our case, FiiO X5 III) makes you literally arrange a dance floor in your head. Although the proprietary emitter with titanium deposition does not allow the bass to heavily creep into the midrange, the midrange is clearly lost compared to the same DN-2000. But to compare hybrids and dynamic headphones by sound is not the most professional solution, so everyone chooses what he likes: "neutrality" or bass that sometimes makes the skull vibrate. The imaginary scene of Titan 5 is worked out on a solid five.
With what to listen?
Dunu DN-2000 is quite good at playing with simple sources like the iPhone or MacBook, but to fully unlock their potential, it's better to use a quality player and Lossless formats, of course. But the Titan 5 connect to smartphones and tablets, as it turned out, is meaningless: the headphones are very sensitive to the quality of recording, so it's better to get a good portable audio player. Genre headphones are designed for hip-hop, electronic music and those areas where a deep and powerful bass will benefit.
Several tracks for an example.
The Weeknd - Often.
Titan 5 is simply created for most of the songs of Abel Tesfaye, who, despite his love for autotune, shows in his tracks a deep and rich bass. With these headphones, the usual tracks played quite differently.
Rise Against - Endgame.
Tireless Chicago truth-seekers continue to resist public injustice to this day, but best of all they succeeded in the middle of the zero ones. One of the main punk bands of the new millennium does not deviate from the brand frenzied guitar pressure, and this combination is very well suited for DN-2000.
Benjamin Clementine - I Tell A Fly.
Having escaped from London to Paris at the age of 19, Benjamin begins to sing in subway crossings, interrupts by accidental work and spends the night in the corners. Glory falls as suddenly - producers, television, a meeting with Paul McCartney. Now the performer wanders in the Bermuda triangle of the best piano authors - Chopin, Ravel and Sati, and has one of the most sensual voices of this century. His vocal-piano compositions are very well revealed both with the help of DN-2000, and on Titan 5.
conclusions
And the conclusion suggests itself - both models are very good in their category, which one to give preference to is a matter of taste. DN-2000 (about $ 300) are more neutral, while Titan 5 (135 dollars) are made explicitly with an emphasis on bass. Both offer a good design and a rich set of delivery, and DN-2000 stands out also for excellent ottyuningovannym sound. It can not but rejoice that Dunu continues to offer different options for good sounding at an affordable price and with excellent quality.
