Headphone review FiiO FH1 - strengthening positions

The onset of FiiO on the market of headphones can be considered accomplished. Shock parts in the face of the line F9 / F9Pro with the support of F5 and EX1-II took a foothold, cleared it, and now the company draws up reserves in the face of FH1.

Initially, this model was supposed to be released under the F7 index, but FiiO decided to provide separate indices for all types of headphones, and the younger hybrids received the code FH1. It is worth noting that, despite the reduced price (the recommended price of FH1 is $ 80), the company tried to make it as saturated as possible technologically. The sound is answered by a 10-mm speaker with titanium sputtering (in the F9 series, by the way, 9.2 mm) and Knowles 33518. The soundtrack is made of bronze, which, according to the developers, improves the quality of bass. In the kit, there are still two wires ... In general, for this cost "headphones" are not badly stuffed.

On sale in Russia, headphones have not yet appeared, but I think this is a matter of the near future.

Packing and delivery kit

"Tara" FH1 as a whole is traditional: the black "outer part" hides a dense box of the same black cardboard. Inside, everything is also familiar: a plastic box for storing headphones and accessories, two sets of nozzles for 3 pairs in each, the headphones themselves and the instruction.

Wires expectedly put two: more pathetic wicker balanced with a 2.5-mm plug and an ordinary with a three-button headset (excellent, by the way, works with new players FiiO). The quality of the microphone is average, but if you move the control unit closer to your face, you will be heard normally.

Design and comfortable wearing

FH1, as a more affordable model, is made of plastic, but it looks very good, the glossy case in combination with the silver ring on the front panel really does something like an eye (what FiiO is pinned on in an advertising campaign). In combination with a quality assembly, this adds points to the appearance of the headphones. The model is planned to be produced in four colors: black, dark blue, green and red, but only the first two are available so far. Separately, I note the same sound guide, it not only looks nice, but also keeps the nozzles well, which positively affects the experience of operation.

In comfort, the headphones leave no questions - a smooth oval body sits normally in any ears (except perhaps the smallest ones), and the correct angle of the sound guide provides the traditional soundproof form factor. It will be enough for noisy street or public transport, but in the subway or airplane you will need something better.

As well as in older models, there are used interchangeable wires with MMCX connectors. They are very dense, with a strong fixation, but thanks to large connectors and corrugations on them, it is still possible to disconnect the wire (the problems of the first revision of F9 are taken into account). The model is designed for breezing, I think it can be tried to put the cable down, which requires a different wire, but it will be, to put it mildly, not optimal. As I wrote above, two wires are included in the kit, both have memory-free ears formed near the connectors. "Headset" wire hardens a little in the cold, but not critical, the microphone effect is poorly expressed. "Normal" - even softer, does not harden and does not make noise at all from friction about clothes. Particularly pleased that FiiO switched to corner connectors, which should positively affect the durability of the wires.

Sound

The following equipment was used for listening.

  • Yulong DA9 and Resonessence Labs Concero HP as DAC and Amplifier
  • Apple MacBook Pro Retina 2016 as a source
  • Fidelia as a player
  • Lotoo PAW Gold, theBit OPUS # 2 and Astell & Kern A & ultima SP1000 and others as portable players
  • High Definition Records in Lossless-formats (Dr. Chesky The Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc and others)

Before listening to the headphones were warmed for 48 hours.

In this model only two radiators are used - dynamic and reinforcing, and, at least by ear, the "dynamo" here responds not only to LF, but also to MF, at least the bottom half. General tuning of this model is made taking into account popular music and a mass listener, not accustomed to accented and / or detailed submission of HF. Simply put, this model offers a slightly warmish sound without aggression on the HF.

Let's go traditionally from the bottom up. LF here accented, however, without busting, they have good massiveness and normal, although not the fastest speed. The bass goes to a fairly good depth, but fortunately, the "lower bass" is limited quantitatively and therefore stay in place well. In general, the bass, despite accentuation, does not crawl on the MF, as it often happens in inexpensive hybrid models. The transfer of textures is also normal, although it does not reach the excellent one anyway. In general, if you compare with F9Pro, the bass here is more suitable for connoisseurs of weighty presentation.

The mid-range is generally not bad, it is slightly softer than traditional low-cost hybrid models with reinforcement feed, but the resolution remains more than normal for its price category. There is a slight effect of excessive softness in the area of combining drivers, but it somehow makes itself felt in any inexpensive hybrids. The imaginary scene is slightly less than the average in width and depth, expected for headphones with a warm FH1 feed, they build the scene a little intimate, however, the separation of plans and instruments remains clear. Headphones normally convey the emotions of vocalists and the nature of instruments, but do not try to add anything from themselves, so fans of added aggression or accented emotions are unlikely to do.

HF here is quantitatively pressed for the sake of RF-fobs, there are no clearly expressed peaks, but in general the resolution of this part of the range is good. Attacks are simplified, as are attenuations, but in general the "top" is perceived as normal, they do not seem cloudy or pushed into the background. Of course, stratification, the characteristic reinforcement multidrivers, there is not, but the HF does not sink into a monotonous mess, remaining legible.

Naturally, I'll tell you about several comparisons that I conducted.

FiiO F9 Pro . I think this comparison is easy to extrapolate to the usual version of F9. The older model of hybrids offers better resolution for midrange and sharper high frequencies, which translates into a more monitored feed of this range and assumes greater criticality to the source and records.

Ostry KC09 . Also slightly warm on the filing model, but due to the use of only one radiator, playing is more coherent. Ostry offers slightly better resolution and much smoother HF, which makes their pitch even slightly warmer with respect to FH1.

iBasso IT01 . Fresh new from iBasso differs feed with a big accent in the areas of midbass and HF, which gives their presentation a spectacular, although not always natural. The main criterion for choosing between these models first of all will be the attitude of the listener to the HF, which in IT01 is much more accentuated.

Compatibility

In principle, these headphones do not require any steep source, they can be used with the phone / tablet, although the potential in them is quite enough for the players in the initial price segment, the main thing is to choose the right option for you on the filing option.

Stylistically, the model is universal, if the user prefers a slightly dark pitch, but especially they are good with "smart" electronic music, classic rock, well-recorded "pop". To the quality of the record, the model is fairly tolerant, I would rate them by 5 points on a standard 10-point scale of "pickiness".

Traditional sample tracks

The Cranberries - No Need to Argue . No sooner had the 2018 began, and world music already bears heavy losses ... Calm, almost meditative beginning of the track very well lies in the darkened manner of filing FH1, and the emotionally rich voice of Dolores is transmitted exactly as it will remain in the memory of the fans.

INXS - Suicide Blonde . Australian inventors have always been famous for the ability to interfere with different styles, giving out their own, with no one comparable sound. This track was no exception - it's easy enough hard rock, it's spectacularly decorated with keyboard and wind instruments that perfectly outlines the rhythm section performed by FH1.

Wes Montgomery - Besame Mucho . Very unusual performance of classical melody by one of the best jazz guitarists in the history of music. Heroes of today's review decently copes with the insinuating manner of recording, characteristic for those years, well sharing the batch of solo guitar and "additional instruments", helping to enjoy the virtuoso performance.

conclusions

Perhaps, right now we can assume that FH1 will be the most mass model of the company. Preserving the same good package and convenient design, the headphones offer more "mass" and "comfortable sound", while at a more affordable price.
