Headphone review Dunu Falcon C - weigh, falcons, eagles!

The company Dunu has long been in the "less is better". Being one of the top OEM manufacturers manufacturing headphones for many brands, for releases under their brand they choose only really interesting solutions, and their novelty Falcon C is no exception.

Traditionally, the products of the upper price segments of Dunu are multi-driver hybrid models of varying degrees of complexity, but sometimes Dunu also produces models with one radiator, just like the characters of today's review. These headphones use a new radiator, the diaphragm of which is made with the use of carbon nanotubes, which made it possible to obtain an easy, but sufficiently rigid membrane, which provides low distortion and decent detail. Traditionally for the company, it is decorated in a metal casing with a replaceable cable, the cost of the novelty is about 220 dollars.

Packing and delivery kit

The box is traditional for Dunu, and for headphones in general. Of the variety here - only an unusual foil-colored outer cover of silvery color. Inside is another box with a photo of Max Barsky on the inside of the cover (maybe Max saved the dog's favorite dog director?), The box is expected to lie headphones and accessories.

  • A convenient storage box made of black aluminum
  • adapter for 6.3 mm and for dual "aircraft" connector
  • two sets of nozzles (3 pairs of different sizes) with different width of the bell
  • SpinFit attachments set
  • Velcro loop for coiling wire

In general, the accessories here obviously did not save.

Design and comfortable wearing

The developers of the company finally discovered for themselves such concepts as ergonomics and comfort, and confidently moved to conquer unexplored territories. The first sign that announced the approach of the new concept was the DK-3001, they may not have been the standard of convenience, but they got into most ears without problems. Falcon C takes one more step in this direction. Their bodies are rather small in size, made of metal, devoid of sharp corners and protruding faces. Falcon are designed for breezing, and trying to put them down with wire is unlikely to succeed. The sound guide is also made at the right angle, which makes it possible to wear these headphones without problems for a long time, and thanks to the small thickness of the Falcon, read it not from the ears.

The case of headphones is made of the "liquid metal" gaining popularity in the IEM. This marketing name hides several different alloys, which are distinguished by their increased strength, which positively affects the acoustic properties of the headphone housings. Previously, similar materials used Campfire Audio, now the technology is available in a more accessible segment.

The design of the model is devoid of pretentiousness and any decorative elements, everything is subject to functional necessity. On the inside there are large enough holes, covered with a grid, but the experiment with their blockage of particularly noticeable results did not give, so I guess that they do not apply to acoustic design (just in case, I'll explicitly specify again that I may be wrong). The headphones provide a soundproofing that is normal for this form factor, even slightly exceeding the "average values for the hospital" (traditionally - more than enough for street or public transport, but still not enough for a subway or plane).

Collected Falcon C is very high quality, and the complete wire with connectors is no exception. In this model, MMCX connectors are used with neatly matched locking force: enough to ensure reliability, but without the need to use heavy crawler technology to detach. The cable itself is twisted, it is made of silvered copper of high purification, the insulation is thick enough, so the lace looks and feels steeper than the stock from previous models of the company. He gets a little confused, but thanks to a good thickness it is quickly unraveled. In the cold, it almost does not harden, and the memory-free eyes, formed near the connectors, reduce the microphone effect almost to zero.

Of course, I will miss the traditional for Dunu rubber "tongue" for winding the wire, but it looks like it is receding into the past.

For fans of "shoelaces" Dunu produces alternative wires, but the experiment with iBasso CB13 showed that it is unlikely that the change of wire here makes sense.

Sound

The following equipment was used for listening.

  • Yulong DA9 and Resonessence Labs Concero HP as DAC and Amplifier
  • Apple MacBook Pro Retina 2016 as a source
  • Fidelia as a player
  • Lotoo PAW Gold, theBit OPUS # 2 and Astell & Kern A & ultima SP1000 and others as portable players
  • High Definition Records in Lossless-formats (Dr. Chesky The Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc and others)

Before listening to the headphones were warmed for 72 hours.

Just in case, I repeat the obvious fact, which is often forgotten. Headphones, especially single-wheel dynamic models, depend heavily on the correct selection of attachments, so if you become a proud owner of the Falcon, take the time to think carefully about the appropriate attachments for you, they should sit perfectly, but without excessive density (therefore, by the way , I do not really like SpinFit with this model, but everyone's ears are different, so be sure to try them).

The first thing that attracts attention in this model of headphones is the bass. Fortunately, in this case, attention is due not to quantity, but quality. Personally for me (still remember that any review of sound is subjective by definition?), Falcon C offers the best bass in the price category to as much as $ 500 (or maybe even higher). It is simply optimally balanced quantitatively, goes really deep, is perfectly controlled and skillfully balances between weight and bend, making a slight bias towards the latter. Of course, this model can easily work out textures and create the basis for the melody, the bass, when necessary, comes to the fore, when it's not necessary - it goes back to the background positions.

The midrange range is traditional for modern models with a slightly V-shaped frequency response. It has a good (for the dynamic model) details, but does not try to give the reinforcement speed and sharpness, which positively contributes to listening to poor-quality recordings, the headphones do not try to pull out all the flaws of the sound engineers. The upper half of the MF is slightly accented, which, on the one hand, effectively emphasizes vocals, especially female, and on the other - excessive emphasis not on all tracks is beneficial and in rare cases may sound like some lack of weight. The imaginary scene is quite large - more than the average in width and somewhere medium in depth, but the qualitative separation of plans allows the headphones to play very voluminously.

HF here is a little underlined, so that the RF fobs this model can hardly be recommended for purchase without listening, but for my taste, the "top" here does not cross the line beyond which there are too many (even do not approach it closely, although sometimes and run close). HF is good at detailing (of course, corrected for the price category), have well-defined attacks (sometimes even slightly better than we would like) and extended fading, which allows the headphones to play back the HF quite "richly", although, of course, to the upper-middle and higher segments with their "layered tops" they still do not hold out.

Naturally, the review would be incomplete without a few comparisons. I chose only those models that can be considered competitors from the number that I have at hand.

MEEAudio Pinnacle P1 . In general, everything is quite simple, the difference between these models is their different directions. Where Pinnacle, justifying its name, tends up, playing those longest HF, Falcon falcon falls down, offering those very ideal low frequencies. In general, the choice between these models (and in general between P1 and all other headphones) is quite simple.

iBasso IT03 . The hybrid model from iBasso offers a very technical and neutral sound for lovers of smooth (relatively, of course) filing. If you discard the difference in comfort (not all IT03 "by the teeth" well, or "by the ears"), and talk about sound, the Falcon C is better on LF, and IT03 will please more detailed MF (armature-c), HF subjectively slightly better from Faclon.

Dunu DN-2002 . Again, in comparison headphones will have to take out the brackets of ergonomics, which in 2002 to the liking of not everyone. By the sound of the model, too, are very different, the hybrids emphasize the MF, slightly pressing the "bottom and top" of the frequency range, and Falcon C, on the contrary, these edges are slightly elevated.

Compatibility

Despite the high sensitivity and low impedance, using these headphones with phones and other "simple" sources of meaning is not enough, they simply will not be able to reveal the potential of the model. Here you need a noisy player with good LF control (for sure: Cayin N5ii, A & K AK70 Mk II or Lotoo Paw 5000 Mk II).

Stylistically Falcon C is very versatile, I liked them and with various heavy music (although the wretchedness of the latter on the HF makes itself felt), and with electronic styles (here, however, models with pumping LF can like more), and with instrumental compositions, of course, this is not a complete list. The model is tolerant enough to poor-quality recordings, the main thing is that the HF be clean, so that on the "fault-finding" scale they get somewhere 5-6 out of 10.

Traditionally, several tracks in the role of example

Sade - By Your Side . The bass line of this track is good with almost any technique, but in an ideal performance Falcon C, and even combined with the expressive delivery of vocals, it simply dissolves in itself, giving the already beautiful track extra effektnosti.

Billy Idol - Hot in the City . Another track, perfectly emphasizing the dignity of these headphones. There is also an excellent rhythm section, revealing low frequencies, and an electronic line with effects, allowing you to enjoy the construction of an imaginary scene, and vocals for demonstrating the MF.

John Mayer - Gravity . At first I had a desire to "peek at the answer at the end of the problem book" and choose a track that ideally fits to the headphones (something from jazz with a double bass, or, say, Imagine Dragons with their love for percussion would be ideal). But I decided that it would be very simple, and chose John Mayer with his melancholic blues, in which Falcon fully show their strengths.

conclusions

Dunu has a fairly powerful middle segment player (the top of it), using a high-tech radiator has made it possible to get a very interesting sound, and I strongly hope that in the future we will see a hybrid model in which such a driver will be responsible for LF.
