Review of the player xDuoo Nano-D3 - for the future of summer

"No matter how high you take off, do not forget about your roots" - decided in xDuoo and decided to update the model that led them to the current success. Simply put, they released the successor to X2, developing the same ideas at a "better" level, calling it Nano-D3.

The new player, as is obvious from the name, is built on RKNanoD from Rockchip, in order to help the codec of the chipset is given the same LMH6643, designed to provide more power. The design was updated, there was a place for a quality screen, but the firmware did not that much, the intercontinental leap forward. Price, however, also did not stay in place, against the backdrop of a much cheaper X2, a new "nanotechnology" successor with a price of 4,900 rubles (at the time of writing the review) looks much more expensive, but, first, for all good things you have to pay, secondly, it's still one of the most affordable players on the market.

Packing and delivery kit

I do not know, maybe it's time for me to abolish this section already? Although where will I write that the developers did not come up with anything new? In general, Nano-D3, as usual, is packed in two layers, solid black cardboard inside, good polygraphy outside. In comparison with the first version (I think it's possible to call X2 so boldly), positive changes begin here.

In the box, in addition to the player itself, there is a MicroUSB cable, spare protective labels on the screen, a blank for an unused 3.5 mm port and various warranty instructions. The cover is not included, I, by the way, do not even know if something is suggested for xDuoo for this player. In theory - should, but I did not check.

Design and management

In xDuoo decided to keep something for which the buyers liked the X2, so the successor also received an aluminum body in black color and quite comfortable mechanical buttons. The developers have just learned to do so that they do not shuffle at the slightest movement of the body of the player. In principle, the appearance of D3 is the principle of "poor, but clean" - there are no design frills here, but the quality of assembly and fit is very good. The player, of course, became slightly larger than its predecessor, but it is necessary somewhere to place a large screen and a more capacious battery.

There are a lot of controls, so some of them had to be placed on the edges of the gadget. On the right side there is an on / off button and two volume buttons. A little lower - the hole to reboot the player. The lower edge is reserved for outputs, to the headphone line there was added line-out. A microUSB slot and a memory card slot were placed on top.

On the front panel, in addition to the screen, there are two navigation buttons for menus and tracks, a large play / pause button (it also serves for selection in the menu) and a back button. In xDuoo, at last there were those who know the word "design" not from books, so the layout of the controls is logical and convenient.

By the way, the screen deserves good words, apparently, the developers have found a treasure with spare parts, hidden by the collectors of telephones of the late 2000s, and pulled from there high-quality displays. So, despite the budget, the player received a normal screen with a good resolution, color reproduction and viewing angles. Of course, the color temperature is shifted somewhere wrong, but there is a margin for brightness, and taking into account the price of the gadget, the screen justifies itself by 150%.

By the way, another area, which the increase in the case has benefited, is the battery. In my standard test to get the claimed 20 hours I could not, but confident 17 hours of playback D3 showed that more than good. A full charge took 3 hours 10 minutes.

Firmware

It is a pity, of course, that here in the creation of software xDuoo did without the help of Hiby, in the case of X20 "call a friend" brought wonderful fruits. D3 clearly demonstrates that the software here is "self-written", logic and control in many ways resemble the X10 . Although, again, in comparison with X2, a huge step forward will not be noticed only by a very visually impaired user (and his neighbors will still retell the news).

The main menu is divided into six tiles, each of which opens its own section. However, some functions are duplicated, and some of the sub-menus can be accessed in different ways.

My Music - of course, contains a media library with the ability to view artists / genres and so on. Immediately there is a favorite and go to the playback screen.

Playing is the second way to get into the section of the currently playing track. The playback screen itself is expected to be simple: cover, track information, progress indicator. If the album cover is very large, the player draws it slowly, not the fastest processor makes itself felt.

Folder - viewing tracks by folder, simply and without extra frills.

Favorites are favorites (remember, I said that many menus are duplicated).

Music Settings - the equalizer, the order of playback, memorizing the position in the track and memorizing the volume. Equalizer, of course, is better not to include.

Settings - system settings. The interface language (Russian is present), sleep and sleep timers, which buttons should work when the screen is locked, the backlight time, firmware update and system information.

As you can see, the firmware here is simple, frills like replay gain or there is no transition to folders, there are easy slowdowns, diacritical marks are not always read. But in general, the software is quite decent, for a given price category it can be considered quite good. The player is devoid of pronounced problems and illogicalities, as well as non-targeted to formats, even DSD understands, although this utility can only be compared with the installation of a turbocharger in Zaporozhets.

Sound

To listen to the device used the following headphones: iBasso IT03 , Meze 99 Classics , Audio Zenith PMx2 , Noble Kaiser Encore , Campfire Audio Andromeda , 64 Audio U12 , HUM Pristine and others.

Overview of the audio part of this player can be done in two versions. If you take into account the price and evaluate the progress compared to the X2, then the Nano D3 sounds very good. It is powerful (not 250 declared milliwatts, but still there is enough power for a lot), it is quite smooth (which pleases after X2 did with HF), it is devoid of any clearly expressed problems or noticeable color. In terms of "trouble-free" I would even put it above X3 , with his manner very freely to handle the MF.

But if you look at the player without taking into account the price category, all codec problems will be clearly visible there. I, perhaps, will describe the sound from the point of view of the "absolute", without making constant references like "for this segment" or "in its category".

Low frequencies are normal in resolution, calling them super-fast will be an explicit search, but they do not slip into a rumble (in many respects, thanks to the absence of a "traditional" accent on midbass). There are even more or less successful attempts to play shock, but the depths of the bass often do not suffice, this part of the range is simplified and pushed to the background, but, perhaps, it's better than if they crawled to other frequencies.

MCH is also not super-detailed, but in general their resolution is normal. The player does not try to emphasize emotions, although what is, completely wins. In general, Nano D3 lacks any spectacular accents in its presentation, which makes it, on the one hand, fairly honest, on the other - sometimes it makes it sound simple. The imaginary scene is very flat, as is usually the case, the codec does not cope with the separation of plans in depth, the width is also slightly less than average, but the tools do not even fall into one pile.

HFs are simplified, attacks and fades are sharper than they should be, there is almost no separation, but the resolution is more or less decent. However, the developers of xDuoo should be praised already for the fact that the high-frequency D3 made a significant step forward in naturalness in comparison with the X2.

Comparisons, I this time, perhaps, I will not paint, not so many players of this price category visited me on the reviews. To put it bluntly, xDuoo X2 is noticeably worse, xDuoo X3 is about parity on the principle of "two evils choose the lesser", the rest players like FiiO X1-II and Hidizs AP60-II are already better, especially on sensitive headphones.

Compatibility

As I wrote above, the player is powerful enough, therefore, despite small sizes, it is capable of swinging even tight headphones, although there probably is not much point in this. Nano D3 is still a portable device, and most of the tight headphones are clearly not suitable for wearing on the street, and they need a source more. On the other hand - the power reserve, as they say, "does not pull a pocket" and someday it can come in handy. With sensitive IEM the player makes a little noise, but for these cases, humanity came up with adapters-attenuators. However, the player in any case is not particularly logical to use with top multidirectional armatures, good dynamic models of the upper-middle segment (yes, as the voice from the back desk - Ostry KC09 suggests) are better for it.

Stylistically, the player, perhaps, can be considered universal. It is not perfect, but it is equally not perfect with tracks of any directions and genres. To the quality of the recording, it is quite tolerant (about 5 out of 10), the main thing is that the sound engineers try to convey the emotions as it should.

Traditionally, several tracks for example

Roy Orbison - Pretty Woman. It's funny how the live version of this track differs from the sleek cine version, which we all know. In this case, the energy of live performance outweighs everything, and even on the Nano D3, the track sounds impressive and stylish.

Dusty Springfield - Son of a Preacher Man. Clean midrange, normal low-frequency control - what else do you need to play this track? Nothing, so here D3 shows itself as a diligent source, allowing to enjoy all the nuances of vocals and orchestral arrangements.

Basia - Cruising for Bruising. A bit of a nostalgic pop track from Barbara Trzetrzelewska (do whatever you want with me, but I do not undertake transcribing her name) in the performance of D3 sounds quite authentic: a light rhythm section, lyric vocals, background keyboards - everything is in place.

conclusions

In general, the target audience of D3 looms quite clearly. The player turned out to be quite interesting, its main advantages are good power and a long time of operation. So it will be an ideal device for those who like to listen to music "on the go" - without trying to listen to microns and small details. Due to its filing, it makes an excellent pair for the tasteful dynamic IEM and high-resistance "inserts", now experiencing a second wave of popularity.
